This page collects the Google Ads statistics worth quoting in 2026: how much Google earns from advertising, what a click costs and how often it converts by industry, how many searchers click ads at all, the rules that govern healthcare and addiction treatment ads, and what AI Overviews change for advertisers.
Every number links to the page where it is published. Revenue figures come from Alphabet's filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Benchmarks come from named vendors with their method described, and older studies carry their year. Where a statistic that circulates online could not be traced to a source, we say so and give the figure the evidence supports.
Google ad revenue and growth
Alphabet reports Google's advertising revenue in three lines: Search and other, YouTube ads and the Google Network. These are audited figures from its annual and quarterly filings.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Google advertising revenue was $294.7 billion in 2025, up from $264.6 billion in 2024. | Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K | 2025 |
| Google Search and other revenue grew by $26.4 billion in 2025, to about $224.5 billion. | Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K | 2025 |
| YouTube ads revenue was $40.4 billion in 2025, up $4.2 billion on 2024. | Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K | 2025 |
| Google Network revenue fell to $29.8 billion in 2025, from $30.4 billion in 2024. | Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K | 2025 |
| Alphabet generated more than 70% of its total revenue from online advertising in 2025. | Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K | 2025 |
| Paid clicks on Google Search rose 6% in 2025 and cost per click rose 7%. | Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K | 2025 |
| Google advertising revenue was $81.6 billion in Q2 2026, up from $71.3 billion in Q2 2025. | Alphabet, Form 10-Q for Q2 2026 | 2026 |
| Paid clicks on Google Search grew 13% year over year in Q2 2026, while cost per click grew 3%. | Alphabet, Form 10-Q for Q2 2026 | 2026 |
The "$134 billion" figure still quoted on some sites matches Google's ad revenue for 2019. The current annual figure is more than twice that.
Google Ads benchmarks: CTR, CPC and conversion rate
LocaliQ and WordStream publish yearly search ad benchmarks from thousands of their customers' Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns. Treat them as directional: the data is mostly US small and mid-sized advertisers.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| The average click-through rate for search ads across industries is 6.64%. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| The average cost per click across industries is $5.42, up slightly on the prior year. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| The average Google Ads conversion rate across industries is 8.18%. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| The average cost per lead is $66.69, and it fell overall for the first time in 5 years. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| Arts and entertainment has the highest click-through rate (12.75%) and the lowest cost per click ($1.63). | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| Finance and insurance has the lowest conversion rate, at 2.64%. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
Cost per click and cost per lead by industry
The same report breaks results out by industry. Health and professional services sit at the expensive end of the table.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Attorneys and legal services pay the highest average cost per click ($9.87) and cost per lead ($131.63). | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| Home and home improvement advertisers pay $8.33 a click and $90.92 per lead. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| Dentists and dental services pay $8.00 a click, convert 10.67% of clicks and pay $72.97 per lead. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| Physicians and surgeons pay $4.76 a click and convert 12.43% of clicks, for a $40.04 cost per lead. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| Health and fitness advertisers pay $6.17 a click and $67.36 per lead. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
| Animals and pets has the highest conversion rate in the report, at 16.22%. | LocaliQ and WordStream, Search Advertising Benchmarks 2026 | 2026 |
A high cost per click is fine when the lifetime value of a client is high. A dental implant patient or a legal client is worth far more than the $70 to $130 it costs to generate the lead.
How many searchers click Google ads
Most searches never produce an ad click. Clickstream studies and click-through studies measure this in different ways, so read the base of each number.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| About 1% of all US Google searches ended in a click on a paid ad, across all searches including those with no ad. | SparkToro and Datos, 2024 Zero-Click Search Study | 2024 |
| When ads appear, SparkToro estimates paid ad click-through at roughly 5% or higher. | SparkToro and Datos, 2024 Zero-Click Search Study | 2024 |
| EU mobile searchers were almost 50% more likely to click a paid ad than US mobile searchers. | SparkToro and Datos, 2024 Zero-Click Search Study | 2024 |
| The first ad position had a blended click-through rate of 2.1% in one agency panel, falling to 1.8% when an AI answer was on the page. | First Page Sage, Google CTR by Ranking Position 2026 | 2026 |
| Paid results took 11.4% of non-navigational discovery clicks in the same panel, down from 14.6% in 2024. | First Page Sage, Google CTR by Ranking Position 2026 | 2026 |
| A top search ad lifted top-of-mind brand awareness by 6.6 percentage points, an 80% relative lift, in a Google and Ipsos test with 800 US consumers. | Social Media Today, reporting the Google and Ipsos MediaCT study | 2014 |
The widely quoted claim that the top 3 paid ads take 46% of the clicks on a results page could not be traced to a study, and we have left it out. The SparkToro figures above are the best current evidence on how often searchers click ads. The "80% brand awareness" figure is real, but it is a relative lift from 8.2% to 14.8%, measured in simulated searches in 2014. First Page Sage's numbers come from its own client panel of 1,184 domains, March to August 2026.
Return on Google Ads spend
Google publishes the assumption it uses to estimate the value of its ads to US businesses. It is a modelling assumption, so quote it as one.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Google's economic impact model assumes businesses generate an average of $2 in profit for every $1 spent on Google Ads. | Google, Economic Impact Report methodology | 2025 |
| The same model assumes businesses get 5 organic search clicks for every ad click, valued at about 70% of an ad click. | Google, Economic Impact Report methodology | 2025 |
| Combining both assumptions, Google estimates a business receives $8 in profit from Google Search and Ads for every $1 spent. | Google, Economic Impact Report methodology | 2025 |
Some sites quote the $2 figure as "revenue". Google's current methodology page calls it profit, and the $2 traces to an estimate by Hal Varian, Google's chief economist, from advertiser cost-per-click data. It is an average across advertisers, and your own return depends on your margins and conversion rate.
Healthcare and addiction treatment ad rules
Google restricts healthcare advertising by product and by country. These are the rules as Google states them; read the policy pages before you launch.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery-oriented drug and alcohol addiction services need Google approval to advertise in 6 countries: Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States. | Google Ads, Addiction services policy | 2026 |
| The policy covers treatment providers, sober living, mutual help groups, referral agencies and crisis hotlines; nicotine and behavioral addictions are out of scope. | Google Ads, Addiction services policy | 2026 |
| Online pharmacies and telemedicine providers must apply for certification before advertising prescription drug services. | Google Ads, Healthcare and medicines policy | 2026 |
| In the US, health insurance advertisers must be certified; dental, vision and travel insurance ads are not restricted. | Google Ads, Healthcare and medicines policy | 2026 |
| LegitScript lists 16 standards for addiction treatment certification, which it says is required to run addiction treatment ads on Google, Meta, Microsoft Ads and Nextdoor. | LegitScript, Addiction Treatment Certification | 2026 |
| LegitScript's application fee is $1,395 to $1,595 per facility, plus an annual fee of $2,550 to $3,095 per facility. | LegitScript, Addiction Treatment Certification | 2026 |
Speculative and experimental treatments and unauthorized pharmacies are banned outright, and Google treats violations as egregious, which can mean account suspension without warning. Ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode
AI Overviews now sit above both organic results and many ads. Google is placing ads inside them and inside AI Mode.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, and AI Mode has passed 1 billion. | Google, Sundar Pichai's I/O 2026 keynote | 2026 |
| Google said it was expanding ads in AI Overviews to desktop and bringing ads to AI Mode at Google Marketing Live 2025. | Google, Google Marketing Live 2025 | 2025 |
| AI Overviews drive over 10% more queries globally for the types of queries that show them. | Google, Q2 2025 earnings remarks | 2025 |
| 18% of Google searches in a March 2025 panel of 900 US adults produced an AI summary. | Pew Research Center, 2025 | 2025 |
| Users clicked a link inside the AI summary on 1% of visits to pages that had one. | Pew Research Center, 2025 | 2025 |
Google does not publish click-through rates for ads inside AI Overviews. For what AI answers do to organic clicks, see our Google search statistics and the explainer on AI Overviews.
What these numbers mean for advertisers
- Budget for rising clicks. Paid clicks grew 13% in Q2 2026 and cost per click is still edging up. A flat budget buys a shrinking share of the auction.
- Judge cost per lead against client value. Dentists pay about $73 per lead and law firms about $132. Both make sense when one client is worth thousands.
- Use paid search where intent is commercial. Ads suit searches like "emergency dentist near me", where the searcher is ready to call or visit today.
- Pair ads with organic visibility. Google's own model counts 5 organic clicks for every ad click. Ranking organically for the same terms compounds what you pay for; see SEO statistics. Rank.ai checks your Google keyword rankings daily, so you can see which paid terms you already win organically.
- Get certified before you build campaigns. For addiction treatment, telehealth with prescriptions and health insurance, certification comes first. Campaigns built before approval will not serve.

Sources and method
We chose statistics that advertisers quote and that come from a primary or clearly attributed source: Alphabet's SEC filings for revenue, the LocaliQ and WordStream 2026 benchmarks for campaign performance, SparkToro's clickstream study for click behavior, Google's own policy and methodology pages for rules and return assumptions, and Pew Research Center for AI summaries. Vendor and agency figures are labelled with their sample. Statistics that circulate without a traceable source were left out and noted. All figures and links were checked on 2026-10-08.
