This page collects the SEO statistics worth quoting in 2026: how clicks fall by ranking position, how many pages get no search traffic at all, how much traffic organic search drives, what AI Overviews do to clicks, how fast AI referrals are growing and what top-ranking pages look like.
Every number links to the study or dataset it comes from, with the publisher, sample and year. Most SEO data comes from tool vendors and agencies (Ahrefs, Backlinko, BrightEdge, First Page Sage, Similarweb), so we name each one and describe its sample. Neutral sources (Google, Pew Research Center, StatCounter) are used wherever they cover the point. Statistics that circulate without a source are noted and replaced with the figure the evidence supports.
Click-through rate by Google position
Clicks fall steeply after the first result. The studies below measure this differently: Backlinko across a large set of search results, First Page Sage from its own client Search Console panel.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| The #1 organic result has an average click-through rate of 27.6%. | Backlinko, Google CTR stats | 2025 |
| The #1 result gets about 10x the click-through rate of the #10 result. | Backlinko, Google CTR stats | 2025 |
| The top 3 organic results get 54.4% of all clicks. | Backlinko, Google CTR stats | 2025 |
| Only 0.63% of searchers clicked a result on the second page. | Backlinko, Google CTR stats | 2025 |
| Position 1 had a 22.6% click-through rate on pages with no AI answer and 3.6% on pages with one, in one agency panel. | First Page Sage, Google CTR by Ranking Position 2026 | 2026 |
| Blended position 1 click-through rate fell to 7.1% in that panel, from 39.8% in its 2025 report. | First Page Sage, Google CTR by Ranking Position 2026 | 2026 |
| The top 3 organic results captured 77.1% of remaining organic clicks in that panel, up from 68.7% in 2025. | First Page Sage, Google CTR by Ranking Position 2026 | 2026 |
| Local pack position 1 kept a 14.8% click-through rate, down 16% in a year. | First Page Sage, Google CTR by Ranking Position 2026 | 2026 |
Backlinko's study covers about 4 million search results and 12.2 million queries; the page was last updated in April 2025 and does not state when the data was collected. First Page Sage's figures come from 1,184 client and panel domains between March and August 2026, weighted to US query volume. The two studies disagree on the level, and agree that position 1 takes the largest share by far.
Pages that get no search traffic
Most pages on the web never receive a visit from Google. Ahrefs measured this across its Content Explorer index.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 96.55% of pages get no organic traffic from Google. | Ahrefs, Search traffic study | 2023 |
| 1.94% of pages get between 1 and 10 organic visits a month. | Ahrefs, Search traffic study | 2023 |
| Of about 20 million indexed pages with no referring domains, only 2,997 get more than 1,000 monthly visits. | Ahrefs, Search traffic study | 2023 |
| The #1 result has an average of 3.8x more backlinks than results in positions 2 to 10. | Backlinko, Search engine ranking study | 2025 |
Ahrefs names three reasons a page gets no search traffic: no one searches for the topic, the page has no backlinks, or it does not match search intent. For more on links, see our backlink statistics; for choosing winnable topics, see keyword difficulty.
Organic search as a traffic source
The "organic search drives 53% of website traffic" line comes from BrightEdge's channel study. It is still widely quoted, and it dates from 2019.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Organic search drove 53.3% of trackable website traffic across BrightEdge's customer base. | BrightEdge, Channel Share Report | 2019 |
| Organic social media drove 5% of trackable traffic, flat since 2014. | BrightEdge, Channel Share Report | 2019 |
| Google Search sent about 191 billion referrals to the top 1,000 websites in June 2025. | TechCrunch, reporting Similarweb data | 2025 |
| Google had 89.94% of worldwide search engine market share in September 2026. | StatCounter, Search Engine Market Share Worldwide | 2026 |
| Every day, 15% of searches on Google have never been asked before. | Google, Debbie Weinstein's remarks at OMR Germany | 2025 |
BrightEdge did not publish its sample size, and the share will have moved since 2019 as zero-click searches grew. Quote it with its year. Google's own search figures, including the 5 trillion searches a year it reported in 2025, are on our Google search statistics page.
AI Overviews and organic clicks
Several studies now measure what AI Overviews do to organic clicks. They differ in method, and all find a large drop for the top result.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| The #1 result's click-through rate is about 58% lower when an AI Overview appears. | Ahrefs, AI Overviews reduce clicks by 58% | 2026 |
| For AI Overview keywords, position 1 click-through fell from 7.3% in December 2023 to 1.6% in December 2025. | Ahrefs, AI Overviews reduce clicks by 58% | 2025 |
| Ahrefs' first version of the study, comparing March 2024 with March 2025, found a 34.5% reduction. | Ahrefs, AI Overviews reduce clicks by 34.5% | 2025 |
| Google users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. | Pew Research Center, 2025 | 2025 |
| 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026. | SparkToro, In 2026 less than one-third of Google searches still send a click | 2026 |
| An AI answer appeared on 81.6% of US queries in First Page Sage's September 2026 crawl, up from 23.4% a year earlier. | First Page Sage, Google CTR by Ranking Position 2026 | 2026 |
Ahrefs' studies use 300,000 keywords and aggregated Search Console data, and describe the result as a correlation. Pew's panel found AI summaries on 18% of searches in March 2025; First Page Sage's much higher 2026 figure comes from its own crawl and is the agency's estimate. The trend in all of them is the same: a ranking now sends fewer clicks when an AI answer sits above it. Read our guide on how to rank in Google AI Overviews.
AI search referral growth
AI assistants send a small but fast-growing share of traffic. Similarweb's data covers referrals from standalone AI platforms to the top 1,000 websites.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| AI platforms sent over 1.13 billion referrals to the top 1,000 websites in June 2025. | TechCrunch, reporting Similarweb data | 2025 |
| AI referrals grew 357% from June 2024 to June 2025. | TechCrunch, reporting Similarweb data | 2025 |
| ChatGPT sent more than 80% of AI referrals to the top 1,000 domains. | TechCrunch, reporting Similarweb data | 2025 |
| AI referrals to news and media sites rose 770% in a year. | TechCrunch, reporting Similarweb data | 2025 |
| AI tools made up 3.2% of US desktop search activity across 41 sites in Q4 2025. | SparkToro, Search happens everywhere | 2025 |
| 34% of US adults have used ChatGPT, about double the share in 2023. | Pew Research Center, 2025 | 2025 |
Google Search still sends about 169 times as many referrals as all AI platforms combined. AI referrals matter for a different reason: the answer often names businesses without sending a click at all, so being named is the outcome to measure. Our explainer on generative engine optimization covers how pages get cited.
What top-ranking pages look like
Backlinko's ranking factor study analyzed 11.8 million Google search results. Treat these as correlations: they describe pages that rank and do not prove what causes the ranking.
| Statistic | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|
| The average Google top-10 result has 1,447 words. | Backlinko, Search engine ranking study | 2025 |
| The average first-page result loads in 1.65 seconds. | Backlinko, Search engine ranking study | 2025 |
| Backlinko found zero correlation between site speed and Google rankings in its data. | Backlinko, Search engine ranking study | 2025 |
The page was last updated in April 2025; the underlying analysis is older. Word count tracks topic depth: a page that fully answers a question tends to be longer. Write to the length the question needs.
What these numbers mean for marketers
- Aim for the top 3 or plan for little traffic. The top 3 results take most organic clicks in every study above, and page 2 gets well under 1%.
- Pick topics people search for. Most pages get no traffic because no one searches for what they cover. Check demand before writing.
- Earn links to the pages that matter. Pages with no referring domains almost never reach 1,000 monthly visits.
- Measure AI answers alongside rankings. A #1 ranking under an AI Overview sends far fewer clicks, and AI assistants name businesses without a click. Rank.ai's AI visibility tracking asks your customers' questions in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini every day and records who is named and which pages are cited.
- Publish steadily on questions your buyers ask. 15% of Google searches are new every day, so there is always uncovered demand. Rank.ai content researches, writes and publishes articles to your site, with review first or on a schedule.
FAQ
What percentage of clicks does the first result on Google get?
Backlinko's study of about 4 million results puts the #1 organic result at a 27.6% average click-through rate. First Page Sage's 2026 client panel found 22.6% on pages with no AI answer and 3.6% on pages with one. The share depends heavily on whether an AI Overview, ads or a map pack sit above the result.
What percentage of web pages get no traffic from Google?
Ahrefs found 96.55% of the 14 billion pages in its index get no organic traffic from Google, and 1.94% get 1 to 10 visits a month. The main reasons are no search demand for the topic, no backlinks, and content that does not match search intent.
What share of website traffic comes from organic search?
BrightEdge's 2019 channel study found organic search drove 53.3% of trackable website traffic across its customers. It is the source of the widely quoted "53% of traffic" figure. Newer studies show more searches ending without a click, so the share for a given site in 2026 may be lower.
Do AI Overviews reduce SEO traffic?
The evidence says yes for the top result. Ahrefs' February 2026 update found a 58% lower click-through rate for the #1 result when an AI Overview appears, and Pew found users clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary against 15% without. Pages cited inside the summary still get some clicks.
How long should an SEO article be?
There is no ideal length. Backlinko found the average top-10 result has 1,447 words, which reflects that ranking pages tend to cover a topic fully. Write as long as the question needs and no longer.
How fast is AI search traffic growing?
Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch shows AI platforms sent 1.13 billion referrals to the top 1,000 websites in June 2025, up 357% in a year. Google Search sent about 191 billion in the same month, so AI is still a small share of traffic.
Sources and method
We chose statistics that SEO practitioners cite and that come from a study with a described method: Ahrefs, Backlinko and First Page Sage for clicks and rankings, BrightEdge for channel share, Similarweb via TechCrunch for AI referrals, SparkToro for zero-click and cross-site search, and Pew Research Center, Google and StatCounter where a neutral source covers the point. Vendor data is labelled with its sample and year. We did not find a reliable, current source for total SEO industry spending, so we left it out. All figures and links were checked on 2026-10-08.
