Where homeowners find a roofer
- The Google Maps pack. Local search experts rank the primary Google Business Profile category as the top factor, ahead of proximity (Whitespark, Local Search Ranking Factors 2026).
- The organic results. The top factor experts name is a dedicated page for each service (Whitespark, 2026).
- AI answers. 45% of consumers used AI tools for local business recommendations in 2026, up from 6% a year earlier (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026).
Figures for the trade are in our roofing statistics, and for local search in general in our local SEO statistics.
Storm season moves roofing demand
Roofing searches follow the weather. US searches for “storm damage roof repair” ran at 1,900 a month in November 2025, January and February 2026, and 9,900 in July and September 2026. “Hail damage roof repair” went from 480 in November 2025 to 4,400 in September 2026. “Roof replacement” peaked at 49,500 in October 2025, against 18,100 in December.
A storm page written the week of the storm is too late to rank. Publish storm, hail and insurance claim articles for each town you serve before the season, and keep them current with real jobs and photos.
A roofing SEO checklist
Google Business Profile
- Set Roofing contractor as the primary category, and add only the secondary categories that match real work.
- If customers don't visit your office, hide the address and set a service area. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says the area shouldn't extend farther than about 2 hours of driving (Google Business Profile Help). Storm chasing far outside it puts the profile at risk.
- Post photos from real jobs, with the town in the description.
- Run a free Google Business Profile auditto see what's missing.
Service and city pages
- One page each for roof replacement, repair, inspection, storm and hail damage, metal roofing, commercial roofing and gutters.
- One page per town you really roof in, with jobs, permits and reviews from that town. Our guide to ranking in nearby cities has a worked example for an Austin roofer expanding to Round Rock, and location pages covers the format.
- Add RoofingContractor schema (a LocalBusiness type on schema.org) and check it with the schema validator.
Reviews
Listings and links
- Keep your name, address and phone the same on Google, Facebook, Yelp, Angi and the BBB. See NAP consistency.
- Get listed in the contractor directories of the shingle and metal brands you're certified with.
What AI answers read for roofers
AI answers about local businesses lean on profiles and directories. Across 1,967,762 AI citations for 1,355 local businesses, 28.5% came from Google Business Profile, the top source, and 94% of the businesses were cited through their Google profile, 93% through Facebook and 85% through Yelp (BrightLocal, AI directory sources study 2026). Experts rank presence on curated “best of” lists as the number one factor for AI visibility (Whitespark, 2026).

How long roofing SEO takes
Profile fixes and new reviews can move your map rank within weeks. New service and city pages usually take months to rank. Nobody can promise a position on Google or a mention in ChatGPT, so measure: scan your map rank before and after each change, and ask AI the same questions every day.
Do it yourself, hire an agency, or use Rank.ai
An owner can handle the profile, photos, reviews and listings. An article for every service, town and storm season is where most roofing companies stall. Rank.ai finds the questions where AI names your competitors, writes the articles, publishes them to your site and keeps checking. Plans start at $49 a month, and done-for-you starts at $2,000 a month.
