Market size, businesses and employment

Census counts roofing contractors under NAICS 238160. Public filings from distributors and shingle makers show where the money flows.

Wages, labor shortage and safety

BLS publishes pay and job projections for roofers, and its fatal injury census shows why roofing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country.

What homeowners spend on roofs

Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies tracks remodeling spending. Angi and HomeAdvisor publish cost guides from their own project data, labelled below as vendor data.

Storms, insurance and seasonality

Hail and wind drive a large share of roof replacements, and most of the work follows the storm calendar. The hail report counts are our own tabulation of NOAA's raw file.

How homeowners find and choose a roofer

Referrals still lead, but search and reviews decide who gets the call. Our online review statistics and local SEO statistics cover the wider consumer research, and our guide to getting more Google reviews covers the work itself.

Rank.ai data: what AI recommends for local trades

We have not yet measured roofers. The closest trade evidence is our local AI index of plumbers in 5 US cities: 60 answers (4 engines, 3 prompts, 5 cities) with 460 picks and 226 distinct businesses, verified against Google Maps via DataForSEO. The city results are on our plumbing statistics page, and the wider picture is in our AI search statistics.

Marketing spend and lead costs

Roofing has some of the most expensive search ad leads in home services. See our Google Ads statistics for cross-industry benchmarks.

What this means for roofing contractors

  • Plan marketing around the storm calendar. Most hail reports land from March to July, and re-roofing sales peak from Q2 to Q4.
  • Collect recent reviews after every job. Most consumers only read reviews from the last three months and skip businesses with fewer than 20.
  • Build a page for each service and town you cover. Our guides to location pages and ranking in nearby cities show how.
  • Answer fast. 39% of homeowners expect a same-day reply, and most prefer a phone call.
  • Check what AI says about you. In our plumber index, only 12% of AI picks were in the Maps top 10. The free AI grade shows whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name your business.

Sources and method

We opened the pages ranking for "roofing statistics" and "roofing industry statistics", including Fixr's roofing industry statistics, and kept only figures we could trace to a primary source. We then added government data (Census County Business Patterns and SUSB, BLS OOH, OEWS, CPS and fatal injury census, NOAA), SEC filings from QXO, Beacon and Owens Corning, insurer and Verisk claims data, Harvard JCHS, and surveys with their sample stated: BrightLocal (1,002 US adults), NAR and NARI, Roofing Contractor and LocaliQ. Hail report counts are Rank.ai's tabulation of NOAA SPC's 1955 to 2024 hail file. Vendor cost guides are labelled. Every figure and link was checked on 2026-10-16.
