This page collects the backlink statistics worth quoting: how link counts line up with Google rankings, how few pages earn any links at all, how quickly links disappear, what link building costs, what Google says about links, and how links compare with brand mentions in AI search.

Every number links to the study or document that published it, with the sample and year. Most link data comes from SEO tool vendors such as Ahrefs and Backlinko, because they run the crawlers. These are correlation studies: they show that top pages have more links, and they cannot prove that links caused the ranking.

Large-scale studies consistently find that top-ranking pages have more links and more linking domains than the pages below them.

The "3.8x" figure is the one most often quoted on other sites. It compares the #1 result with the average of positions 2 to 10, so it describes a strong correlation at the very top of the results. Older pages tend to have had more time to collect links, which is part of why age and links move together.

Earning links is rare, which is why the pages that earn them stand out.

Links you earn do not last forever. Pages move, sites close and editors remove references.

Prices vary with the authority of the linking site and the tactic used. Buying links that pass ranking credit breaks Google's spam policies; these figures describe the market as it exists.

Buying, selling or exchanging links to manipulate rankings is listed as link spam in Google's spam policies. The practical result: a bought link may simply count for nothing.

AI assistants pick sources differently from Google's classic ranking. Early data suggests mentions of a brand matter more there than raw link counts.

What these numbers mean for site owners

  1. Earn links from content people cite. Since 94% of content earns no links, the content that does is usually original data, tools or the most complete answer on a topic. Our guide to anchor text best practices covers how those links should read.
  2. Check what competitors earned. A competitor analysis shows the referring domains behind the pages you need to beat, and keyword difficulty tells you roughly how many you need.
  3. Protect the links you have. With two thirds of links rotting over a decade, redirect old URLs and reclaim broken links pointing at your site.
  4. Get your brand named on trusted sites. For AI search, being named on respected sites correlates more strongly with visibility than link counts do. Local businesses get similar benefits from citation building.
  5. Skip paid link schemes. Google says SpamBrain neutralizes bought links, so the money may buy nothing.
