This page collects the Google search statistics that matter in 2026: Google's share of search, how many searches it handles, how many of those searches send a click to a website, how far AI Overviews and AI Mode reach, and how search habits differ by age.

Every number links to its source. Market share comes from StatCounter's live data for September 2026. Search volumes and AI user counts come from Google's own statements. Click behavior comes from clickstream studies by SparkToro and a browsing panel run by Pew Research Center. Where a number that circulates online has no source, we say so and give the figure that does.

Google's search engine market share

StatCounter measures which search engines send traffic to the sites running its code. Google's worldwide share sat just under 90% in September 2026.

StatisticSourceYear
Google had 89.94% of worldwide search engine market share in September 2026.StatCounter, Search Engine Market Share Worldwide2026
Bing had 5.29% of worldwide search, Yahoo 1.36%, Yandex 1.3%, DuckDuckGo 0.74% and Baidu 0.44%.StatCounter, Search Engine Market Share Worldwide2026
Google had 85.19% of US search in September 2026, with Bing at 9.89%.StatCounter, Search Engine Market Share United States2026
Google had 95.68% of worldwide mobile search in September 2026.StatCounter, Mobile Search Engine Market Share Worldwide2026
Google had 78.12% of worldwide desktop search, with Bing at 14.62%.StatCounter, Desktop Search Engine Market Share Worldwide2026

Some sites still say "more than 90% of users use Google" or quote a 91.54% share. StatCounter's September 2026 figure is 89.94% worldwide, so "about 90%" is the accurate phrasing today.

Search beyond search engines

StatCounter only counts search engines. SparkToro's 2026 study counted searches across 41 sites, including Amazon, YouTube and AI assistants, on US desktops.

StatisticSourceYear
Google accounted for 73.7% of US desktop search activity across 41 sites in Q4 2025.SparkToro, Search happens everywhere2025
AI tools made up 3.2% of US desktop search activity across the same 41 sites.SparkToro, Search happens everywhere2025
Google lost 3.5 points of US desktop search share during 2025, and 2 points in the EU and UK.SparkToro, Search happens everywhere2025

The study uses a Datos desktop panel and excludes mobile apps, so read it as a measure of desktop behavior.

How many searches Google handles

Google rarely publishes search volume. Its current figure appeared in 2025 and was the first update since 2016.

StatisticSourceYear
Google sees over 5 trillion searches a year.Google, Google Marketing Live 20252025
Every day, 15% of searches on Google are brand new and have never been asked before.Google, Debbie Weinstein's remarks at OMR Germany2025

Google Search and other revenue was about $224.5 billion in 2025, up $26.4 billion on 2024.Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K2025

5 trillion searches a year works out to about 13.7 billion a day. The "8.5 billion searches a day" figure that still circulates is an older third-party estimate with no Google source behind it.

Zero-click searches

A zero-click search ends without a click to any result: the searcher reads the answer on the page, searches again or leaves. SparkToro has measured this with clickstream panels since 2019.

StatisticSourceYear
68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026.SparkToro, In 2026 less than one-third of Google searches still send a click2026

58.5% of US Google searches and 59.7% of EU searches were zero-click in 2024.SparkToro and Datos, 2024 Zero-Click Search Study2024
For every 1,000 US Google searches, only 360 clicks went to the open web in 2024.SparkToro and Datos, 2024 Zero-Click Search Study2024
Almost 30% of all clicks from US Google searches went to Google-owned properties in 2024.SparkToro and Datos, 2024 Zero-Click Search Study2024

The 2024 study used Datos panel data and the 2026 study used Similarweb data, so their methods differ slightly. The 2026 figure excludes the Google mobile app, so the true zero-click share is likely higher.

AI Overviews and AI Mode reach

Google reports the reach of its AI search features in earnings calls and at I/O. These are company-reported figures.

How AI summaries change clicks

Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, covering 68,879 Google searches. It is the most neutral measurement of AI summaries so far.

StatisticSourceYear

Pew's study is observational: it shows lower clicks where summaries appear, which may partly reflect the kind of query that triggers a summary. Ahrefs' click-through data points the same way; see our SEO statistics.

AI search use by age

Younger adults are far more likely to search with AI assistants. Pew surveyed 5,123 US adults in February and March 2025.

StatisticSourceYear
58% of US adults under 30 have used ChatGPT.Pew Research Center, 34% of US adults have used ChatGPT2025
41% of adults aged 30 to 49 have used ChatGPT, 25% of those 50 to 64 and 10% of those 65 and older.Pew Research Center, 34% of US adults have used ChatGPT2025
34% of all US adults have used ChatGPT, about double the share in 2023.Pew Research Center, 34% of US adults have used ChatGPT2025
46% of adults under 30 have used ChatGPT to learn something new, against 26% of all adults.Pew Research Center, 34% of US adults have used ChatGPT2025

Google remains the default for every age group, but a business that only measures Google rankings misses where younger customers ask first. For more on that, see LLM visibility.

What these numbers mean for businesses

  1. Google is still the channel to win. Nearly 9 in 10 searches worldwide run on Google, and 95.68% on phones. Google rankings stay the foundation.
  2. Expect fewer clicks per ranking. With 68% of US searches ending without a click, the same ranking sends less traffic than it did in 2024. Measure leads and calls alongside visits.
  3. Write for long, specific questions. Searches of 10 or more words trigger an AI summary half the time. Pages that answer one question clearly are the ones summaries cite.
  4. Track AI answers as a second results page. AI Overviews reach 2.5 billion people a month and ChatGPT reaches most adults under 30. Rank.ai's free AI grade asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini 12 questions your customers ask and scores how often they name your business.
  5. Keep paid search for high-intent terms. Our Google Ads statistics cover current costs and conversion rates by industry.

FAQ

What percentage of searches are on Google?

Google had 89.94% of worldwide search engine market share in September 2026, according to StatCounter. In the US its share was 85.19%, and on mobile worldwide it was 95.68%. Bing is second at 5.29% worldwide.

Google says it sees over 5 trillion searches a year, which works out to about 13.7 billion a day. Google stated the annual figure in 2025, the first update since 2016. It has not published a daily figure.

A zero-click search ends without a click to any result. SparkToro measured 68.01% of US Google searches as zero-click from January to April 2026, up from about 60% in 2024. The searcher either got the answer on the page, searched again or left.

Google said at I/O 2026 that AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, and that AI Mode passed 1 billion. Pew's 2025 panel found 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary at that time.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

The evidence says yes. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.

Is Google losing search market share?

Slightly, on some measures. StatCounter shows Google at 89.94% of worldwide search in September 2026. SparkToro found Google lost 3.5 points of US desktop search share across 41 sites, including AI tools, during 2025.

Sources and method

We chose statistics that are measured directly or stated by Google itself: StatCounter for market share, Google's blog and earnings remarks for volume and AI reach, Alphabet's 10-K for revenue, SparkToro's clickstream studies for zero-click and cross-site search, and Pew Research Center for AI summaries and AI use by age. Company-reported figures are labelled as such, and third-party estimates without a source were left out and noted. All figures and links were checked on 2026-10-08.
