The best AI visibility tool is the one that asks the engines your buyers use, with the questions they ask, often enough to see a trend, and then helps you act on the gaps. For measurement alone, Otterly has the lowest entry price of the tools below and Peec AI offers detailed source analysis; Semrush and Ahrefs suit teams already paying for those suites; Profound targets enterprises; Rank.ai suits businesses that want the articles written and published as well. Prices and engine lists below were checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026.
What to look for in an AI visibility tracker
1. Engines covered, and which ones are add-ons
The main engines are ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. Many tools include three or four in the base price and charge extra for the rest. Start from where your buyers ask. For local service businesses that is usually ChatGPT, Gemini and Google; for software buyers, add Claude and Perplexity.
2. Prompt count and frequency
A prompt is one question the tool asks on a schedule. Twenty well-chosen prompts asked daily beat 500 asked once a month. Check:
- how many prompts the plan includes,
- whether each prompt runs on every engine or counts once per engine,
- how often it runs (daily or weekly),
- whether history is kept so you can see trends.
3. Mentions vs citations
A mention is your brand named in the answer. A citation is a link to a page the engine used. You want both, plus the list of competitor brands named and the domains cited. The cited pages are your to-do list: they're the pages you need to beat or get onto. Our share of voice explainer covers how to turn mentions into a comparable number.
4. Local and country support
AI answers change by location. If you sell in specific cities or countries, check whether the tool can run prompts per country or city, and on which plan. Some tools only add multi-country on higher tiers.
5. What happens after the report
A dashboard tells you where you're losing. Somebody still has to write and publish the pages that change the answer. Some tools offer recommendations, some offer AI writing agents, and some write and publish articles. Price the whole job, including the writing.
6. Pricing model
Watch for per-domain pricing, per-engine add-ons, credit systems and annual-only prices. A cheap plan with one domain and three engines can cost more than it looks once you add the engines you need.

FAQ
What is an AI visibility tracker?
An AI visibility tracker asks AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews a set of questions on a schedule and records whether your brand is named and which pages are cited. Over time it shows your mention rate, citation rate and share of voice against competitors. Some trackers also suggest or produce content to close the gaps.
Is there a free AI rank tracker?
Most paid tools offer a free trial: Profound has a 7-day trial for brands, Otterly offers a free trial, and Ahrefs includes a few custom prompts in its paid plans. For a one-off check, free tools such as the Rank.ai AI grade and AI visibility checker cost nothing. Ongoing daily tracking is almost always paid.
How many prompts do I need to track?
Start with 15 to 30 questions close to a purchase: "best [service] in [city]", comparisons and pricing questions. That's enough to see where you win and lose. Add more once you're acting on the first set.
Do AI visibility tools show exactly what my customers see?
Not exactly. Answers vary by person, location, chat history and the moment of asking, and tools collect answers in different ways. Treat tracked answers as a consistent sample that shows trends, and judge progress by how rates move over weeks.
What's the difference between an AI rank tracker and a normal rank tracker?
A normal rank tracker records your position in a list of search results for a keyword. An AI rank tracker records whether an AI-written answer names you, where in the answer, and which pages it cites. Some tools, including Semrush, Ahrefs and Rank.ai, offer both.
Which AI search engines should I track?
Start with the engines your buyers use. Google's AI features and ChatGPT are the usual starting points: Google says AI Overviews has more than 2.5 billion monthly active users. Add Gemini, Claude and Perplexity if your buyers are technical or research-heavy.
