To rank in ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler reach your site, rank in web search for the short phrases ChatGPT searches, publish a page that answers each buyer question in its first two sentences with specific facts, and get named on the review sites and "best of" lists ChatGPT reads. Then ask the same questions on a schedule and track how often you are named, because one answer proves very little.

"Ranking" in ChatGPT works differently from Google. There is no list of ten positions. An answer names a few businesses, in some order, and links a few pages as sources. You rank when you are one of the names, and ideally the page it links.

This guide explains how ChatGPT picks those names and pages, the factors with real evidence behind them, a step-by-step process, and how to tell whether it is working. It draws on Rank.ai's own sample of 3,930 ChatGPT answers to buyer questions and on published studies, each linked.

What "ranking in ChatGPT" means

For a buyer question such as "best payroll software for a 20-person company", a ChatGPT answer can do three things for you:

OutcomeWhat it looks likeWhy it matters
NamedYour brand appears in the answer, often in a short listThe buyer sees you as an option
Named firstYou are the first or only recommendationOrder shapes what the buyer checks first
CitedOne of your pages is linked as a sourceThe buyer can click through, and ChatGPT is reading your words

Being named and being cited are separate. ChatGPT often names a brand while citing a review site or a list about it. Track both.

How rare is being named? Rank.ai asked an OpenAI model (GPT-4o mini, with web search on) 102 buyer questions tracked by 15 customer accounts, 3,930 times from May to October 2026:

MeasureChatGPT
Answers naming no business61.0%
Answers naming five or more21.7%
Businesses named per answer, on average2.03
Answers with at least one citation96.3%
Citations per answer, on average6.34
Answers naming the brand that tracks the question6.4%
Answers citing that brand's own site3.7%

Source: Rank.ai analysis of 11,726 AI answers, May to October 2026. The questions are customers' own, mostly B2B software, fintech, marketing services and local services. Answers come from the model through its API with Rank.ai's web search tool, which can differ from the ChatGPT app.

Two lessons follow. Answers either name nobody or name a list, so the work is getting onto the list. And even brands actively working on this were named in about 1 answer in 16, which shows how much room there is.

How ChatGPT decides which sources to use

ChatGPT can answer from what its model learned in training, or search the web first. OpenAI says it "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information". Across all kinds of prompts, searching is the exception: Ahrefs found that about 1 in 7 (14.4%) of free, logged-out ChatGPT responses triggered a web search, across 66.6 million responses (Ahrefs, 2026).

Buying questions are different. Questions about products, prices, local businesses and recent events are the ones that need current information. In Rank.ai's sample of buyer questions, ChatGPT ran a search for every answer when search was available.

Step 2: it rewrites the question

ChatGPT "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and may send follow-up queries after reading the first results. Ahrefs counted 1.6 fan-out queries on average per response that searched (Ahrefs, 2026).

The rewrite shortens and sharpens. In Rank.ai's sample, buyer questions averaged 11.7 words and ChatGPT's searches averaged 6.5. Ahrefs also found that 22.9% of ChatGPT's searches in September 2026 contained "2026", and 6.8% used the site: operator, mostly to check a brand's own website.

So a buyer asking "what's the best accounting firm in Denver for a startup that just raised a seed round" may be served by a search like "best startup accounting firms Denver 2026". That short phrase is the keyword to rank for.

Step 3: it pulls results and reads a few pages

SourceWhat OpenAI saysWhat to do
Search partnersChatGPT sends its rewritten queries to third-party search providersBe indexed and ranking in web search, Bing included
OAI-SearchBot"Used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features"Allow it in robots.txt and at your CDN or firewall
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a user's request needs it; OpenAI says it is not used to decide what appears in searchDon't block it
GPTBotCollects training data; separate from searchYour choice: blocking it doesn't remove you from search

ChatGPT reads far fewer pages than it finds. AirOps and Kevin Indig found that 58% of pages ChatGPT retrieves are never cited, and that the citation rate falls from 58.4% at the first result slot to 14.2% at the tenth (AirOps, 2026).

Step 4: it writes the answer and names brands

The answer names the businesses that the pages it read agree on, and cites the pages that supplied clear answers. A brand listed on three of the five pages ChatGPT read is far more likely to be named than a brand with one excellent page of its own. That is why third-party pages matter as much as your site.

ChatGPT ranking factors, and the evidence for each

Nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact weights. These are the factors with published evidence behind them.

FactorEvidenceWhat to do
Position in the search results ChatGPT gets58.4% citation rate at slot 1, 14.2% at slot 10 (AirOps, 2026)Rank for the short rewritten searches
Appearing on "best X" lists43.8% of pages ChatGPT cited for "best X" prompts were "best X" list posts (Ahrefs, 2025)Get onto the lists that rank for your category
Headings that match the question41% citation rate for close heading matches, against 30.2% for weak ones (AirOps, 2026)Put the question, in plain words, in an H2
Focused pagesPages of 500 to 999 words had the best citation rate, 34.3%; pages over 5,000 words fell to 28.6% (same study)One page per question beats one page for everything
FreshnessPages AI assistants cite are 25.7% fresher on average than Google's organic results (Ahrefs, 2025); 79.1% of "best" lists ChatGPT cited were updated in 2025 (Ahrefs)Update money pages when facts change, and show the date
Your own site for brand facts84.4% of ChatGPT answers to factual brand questions cited at least one official source (Ahrefs, 2026)Keep prices, features and policies on your own site, current and crawlable
Evidence on the pageAdding statistics, quotations and citations raised a page's share of generative answers by 30% to 40% in testing; keyword stuffing did worse than no edit (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024)Add numbers, named sources and short quotes
Schema markupAdding JSON-LD changed ChatGPT citations by +2.2%, statistically no different from zero (Ahrefs, 2026)Keep it accurate for Google, but don't expect it to move ChatGPT

One more pattern from Rank.ai's data: Reddit was ChatGPT's most-cited site, at 3.74% of its citations, with YouTube at 2.05% and Wikipedia at 0.27%. No single site dominates. ChatGPT cited 2,448 different domains across 24,905 citations, so the pages that decide your category are specific to it, and you find them by reading your own answers.

How to rank in ChatGPT: 9 steps

1. Write down the questions buyers ask

List 20 to 50 questions in your customers' words, grouped by intent:

IntentExample questions
Best in category"best CRM for a small law firm", "best med spa in Austin"
Comparison"[your brand] vs [competitor]", "is [competitor] worth it"
Price"how much does Invisalign cost in Chicago"
Problem first"my AC is blowing warm air, who should I call in Tampa"
Fit"accounting software that works with Shopify and Stripe"

Put the city in local questions. ChatGPT may infer a location from the user's IP address, so a question with no city gets answered for wherever the asker is.

2. Run a baseline

For each question, open a temporary chat (so memory doesn't shape the answer), make sure search is on, and ask it word for word. Record every brand named, in order, and every page cited. Repeat on two more days.

DateQuestionRunBrands named, in orderPages citedYou named?Your page cited?
Oct 14best CRM for a small law firm1
Oct 15best CRM for a small law firm2
Oct 16best CRM for a small law firm3

Your mention rate is the share of runs that name you; your citation rate, the share that link one of your pages. The free ChatGPT SEO check runs one question through an OpenAI model with Claude and Gemini alongside, and the AI grade runs 12 questions across all three at once.

3. Open the door to OpenAI's crawlers

  • robots.txt: allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply.
  • CDN and firewall: bot protection can block crawlers that robots.txt allows. OpenAI publishes the IP ranges to allow.
  • Index: check your key pages are indexed in Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console.
  • Rendering: the answer should be in the page's HTML text. Text inside images or loaded late by scripts is harder for crawlers to read.

The AI crawler checker tests your robots.txt against the main AI crawlers in one pass.

4. Find the short searches and rank for them

Turn each long question into the 4 to 7 word search ChatGPT is likely to run: category, qualifier, place, year. Check those phrases in Google and Bing. If you are not on page 1 for them, ChatGPT is unlikely to read you, whatever your page says. Our guides to keyword difficulty and SEO competitor analysis cover how to judge and close those gaps.

5. Study the pages ChatGPT cited

Sort every cited page from your baseline into a bucket and decide what to do with each:

Cited page typeWhat to do
A competitor's own pageRead it. What does it state that yours doesn't?
"Best of" list or roundupAsk the publisher to consider you; make your facts easy to verify
Review platformBuild reviews on the platforms that keep appearing
Directory or marketplaceComplete and correct your listing
Reddit or forum threadTake part honestly, as yourself, where buyers ask
Your own pageKeep it current, fast and specific

If ChatGPT keeps citing the same two lists and neither names you, those two lists are your priority.

6. Publish one page per lost question

For each question where competitors are named and you are not, write one page that:

  • answers the question in its first two sentences,
  • uses the question, in plain words, as an H2,
  • gives specifics a model can quote: prices or ranges, hours, service area, integrations, credentials, turnaround,
  • cites the source of every statistic,
  • compares options fairly, your own included, for "best" and "vs" questions,
  • ends with a short FAQ in buyers' words and shows a visible "updated" date.

7. Get named where ChatGPT reads

Third-party mentions are slow, but they compound. Across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 2025). That study measured Google's AI, and the same logic applies to ChatGPT: an engine names the brands its sources agree on. Pitch the lists from step 5, earn reviews, and contribute to the threads where buyers ask.

8. Make your facts consistent everywhere

Your name, prices, services, locations and hours should match on your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Contradictions give ChatGPT a reason to leave you out. For ecommerce, OpenAI lets merchants apply to share a product feed, which feeds ChatGPT's shopping results.

9. Measure on a schedule

Ask the same questions the same way every week or month. Watch three things: your mention rate, whether your new pages are being cited, and whether the cited sources changed. In analytics, ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so you can segment that traffic.

By business type

BusinessWhat usually moves ChatGPT most
Local service (dentist, plumber, law firm)City-specific service pages with prices and hours, reviews, accurate listings, local "best of" lists. For restaurants, OpenAI's help page names OpenTable, Resy and Yelp as result sources. See local business AI search.
B2B softwareComparison and "vs" pages, integration pages, pricing on the site, presence on software review sites and category lists
EcommerceA product feed, product pages with full specs and prices, reviews, gift guides and roundups
Professional services and agenciesPages for each service and industry, named case studies you can share, credentials, directory listings

What doesn't work

TacticWhy to skip it
Repeating your keywordKeyword stuffing scored below doing nothing in the GEO study
Self-written "best of" lists on throwaway sitesBreaks review platforms' and search engines' rules; lists on sites nobody reads don't rank
A near-duplicate page for every variant of a questionGoogle says mass-producing pages aimed at AI fan-out searches can count as scaled content abuse (Google Search Central). One strong page per real question is enough
Hidden text aimed at AI crawlersBreaks Google's and Bing's spam policies, and the visible page still has to answer the question
Buying "guaranteed ChatGPT placement"OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed
Blocking all botsBlocking OAI-SearchBot removes your pages from ChatGPT search
Judging by one screenshotAnswers change from run to run. SparkToro found ChatGPT and Google's AI returned the same brand list twice in fewer than 1 in 100 runs (SparkToro, 2026)

How long it takes

ChangeTypical time to show up
robots.txt fix for OAI-SearchBotAbout 24 hours to register, per OpenAI
New or rewritten pageOnce it is crawled, indexed and ranking for the short search: days to weeks
Getting onto third-party listsWeeks to months, depending on the publisher
What the model knows from trainingOnly when the model is retrained

Judge results over two to three months of repeated tests.

Tools for tracking ChatGPT

Manual testing works for 20 questions. Past that, three runs a question each month gets slow. Options:

  • Free: the ChatGPT SEO check, the LLM SEO tool, which runs GPT, Claude and Gemini models side by side, and the AI grade.
  • Paid: Rank.ai's AI visibility plans ask your questions in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini every day through each engine's API with web search on, record every brand named and every page cited, then write and publish the articles for the questions you lose. The AI visibility tool page shows what you see.
  • Compared: our AI SEO tools list covers the trackers and the content tools side by side.

FAQ

How do I rank content on ChatGPT?

Publish a page that answers one buyer question in its first two sentences, with specific facts and a heading that matches the question, and make sure it ranks in web search for the short phrase ChatGPT searches. Allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it. Then get the brand named on the lists and review sites ChatGPT cites for that question.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

OpenAI says ChatGPT sends its searches to third-party search providers and runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Its help page links Microsoft's privacy statement among its partners, so Bing indexing is worth checking. Ranking well in Google usually goes with ranking well elsewhere, so both matter.

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your CDN, make sure your pages are indexed, and publish pages that answer buyer questions directly with specific facts. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, though placement is not guaranteed.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

You can't buy a place in ChatGPT's organic answers, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed recommendations. Merchants can apply to share product feeds for shopping results.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?

The answer depends on the searches it writes, the results at that moment, the user's approximate location and, with memory on, their saved preferences. Ask each question several times and track how often you are named over weeks.

Is ranking in ChatGPT the same as SEO?

They overlap. ChatGPT reads pages it finds through web search, so pages that rank are the ones it cites. The differences are that ChatGPT searches shorter, rewritten phrases, names brands its sources agree on, and is measured by mention and citation rates over many runs. Our GEO vs SEO comparison covers the rest.

How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?

A crawler fix registers in about a day. A new page needs to be indexed and ranking first, which takes days to weeks. Getting onto third-party lists takes longer. Plan on two to three months before judging.
