How AI search visibility works

Classic SEO measured one thing: your position on a results page. AI search collapses the results page into a single synthesized answer, so visibility becomes binary per engine. Either the answer includes your brand or it does not. That makes AI search visibility worth checking engine by engine, because each one retrieves from different indexes, trusts different sources, and can disagree about whether you exist.

This checker covers the three engines that handle most AI search volume today. It sends your query through each provider's official API with web grounding enabled, then parses every answer for brand mentions and domain citations. The side-by-side result is the useful part. A brand that ChatGPT recommends and Gemini ignores has a Gemini-shaped content gap, usually because the sources Gemini retrieves from (often pages that also rank in Google) do not cover you. Most AI search visibility tools charge for this read; here one query is free, with no account.

What to do with the result depends on which signal failed. No mention anywhere means the engines do not associate your brand with the topic, which is an authority and coverage problem. Mentions without citations mean you are known but not trusted as a source, which is a content depth problem. Both playbooks are covered in our LLM visibility guide and the answer engine optimization guide.

For a deeper read, the AI visibility checker is the same engine with brand-focused framing, the ChatGPT SEO tool zooms in on ChatGPT alone, and the AI Overview checker covers the one AI answer surface this page does not: Google's own AI Overviews. The rank.ai platform ties all of these together with daily tracking across your full prompt set.

Frequently asked.

Which AI search engines does this check?
ChatGPT (OpenAI gpt-4o-mini), Claude (Anthropic claude-haiku-4-5), and Gemini (Google gemini-2.5-flash), all via their official APIs with search grounding enabled. These three handle the large majority of AI assistant queries today. Google's AI Overviews are a separate surface; we have a dedicated AI Overview checker for that.
What counts as being visible in AI search?
Two signals: your brand is mentioned by name in the answer, or a URL on your domain is cited as a source. Mentions show the engine knows you; citations show it trusts your content enough to ground its answer in it. The checker reports both per engine.
Why do the three engines disagree about my brand?
Each engine retrieves from a different index and weighs sources differently. Gemini leans on Google's index, ChatGPT on Bing-flavored retrieval, and Claude on its own search stack. A gap on one engine usually traces back to the sources that engine trusts not covering you, which tells you where to publish next.
How is this different from rank tracking?
Rank tracking measures your position among ten results; AI search visibility measures whether you appear in a single synthesized answer at all. Both matter, and they correlate loosely, since engines retrieve from pages that rank. But it is common to rank well organically and be invisible in AI answers, which is exactly the gap this tool exposes.
Can I track this over time instead of one-off checks?
Yes. The rank.ai platform runs these checks daily across dozens of prompts per brand, samples each engine multiple times to smooth out randomness, and charts visibility and citation share as a trend. This free tool is the single-query version of that pipeline.
